RICHARD’S RACERS
Richard’s Racers was started by siblings Liam and Kayla McCulley, inspired by their family’s own journey with cancer.
In 2012, they lost their dad, Richard, to brain cancer at just 49 years old. They also had the privilege of watching their mom overcome breast cancer and celebrate more than 20 years as a cancer survivor.
Richard’s Racers first came to life in 2018 when they participated in Helderberg Hospice’s Cycling for Life event. It gave them a way to honour their dad while turning their family’s experience into something positive for others affected by cancer.
In 2025, after several years away, a revived Richard’s Racers took on the Winelands Marathon with a team of runners and supporters. Through the incredible support of friends, family and the wider community, they raised funds for Care for Cancer and saw just how much this initiative could grow into.
This year, they are returning to the Winelands Marathon with an even bigger vision for Richard’s Racers, and it feels incredibly special to bring things full circle by supporting Helderberg Hospice. Helderberg Hospice was part of the very beginning of Richard’s Racers in 2018, and the work Helderberg Hospice does for individuals and families affected by life-limiting illness makes this partnership particularly meaningful.
The hope is to continue growing Richard’s Racers into a community that takes on challenges together, raises funds and awareness for organisations doing meaningful work, and keeps their dad’s memory at the heart of it all. For them, every kilometre is about more than reaching a finish line – it is about remembering where they have come from, supporting those still walking their own cancer journey, and turning their family’s experience into something positive.
